Nokia release their first touchscreen mobile phone!

posted February 5th, 2009 by Greg

5800.JPG

This weekend I was lucky enough to get my hand’s on the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music, the very first touchscreen, multimedia based mobile phone from mobile giants Nokia. I myself, am still a proud owner of the million-selling, super popular Nokia N95 but I have to say Nokia’s latest is extremely impressive and by far a better piece of multimedia mobile technology, Let me tell you why :-

FIRST IMPRESSIONS

Upon switching on the Nokia 5800, the first thing you notice is how vibrant the backlight is, complimented by a crystal clear display – lovely! The phone is all about the interactive, quick-and-easy nature of touch sensitivity, so the button layout is minimal. One button for calls, one button for hang-ups and a menu button is all that greets the viewer on the front of the Nokia 5800. This is not a problem as everything can be accessed from just a few finger presses, or finger slides on the highly responsive touchscreen. For Nokia’s first entrance to the touchscreen market, they have certainly got the sensitivity and response of the touch panel bang on, it performs brilliantly.

THAT ALL IMPORTANT CAMERA
At 3.2-megapixel, this may at first not seem that impressive… but you will be pleasantly surprised. What makes the difference with the overall image created by a mobile phone camera, largely depends on the quality of the lens and this is where Nokia have got it covered. The 5800 Xpress Music features a Carl Zeiss optical lens, which creates a more detailed and defined shot than a standard mobile camera. The camera is very easy to use and again the touchscreen controls are extremely effective in getting what you want, quickly and easily. The autofocus and flash create a more flexible mobile phone camera, while the secondary video calling is great for those long distant phone calls.

MUSIC TO DANCE TO, VIDEOS TO RELAX TO
I’ll start this section off with a bold statement – the multimedia centre is one of the best I have seen on a phone of this price range and type…EVER! Upon viewing a trailer for the most recent Batman film The Dark Knight I was met with crystal clear stereo audio, dynamic and clear visuals and an incredible amount of Va-Va-Voom for such a little mobile phone. Let’s not forget Nokia have included a generous 8GB of internal memory, with the capacity for up to 16GB additional external memory – so for the music/film addicts amongst us, it’s possible for 24GB memory! The controls on the media player are easy to use, there are useful playlist editors, many different ways to listen to your music and video and a handy 3.5mm audio jack, allowing you to use a wider range of headphones.

VALUE FOR MONEY?
We currently stock the Nokia 5800 Xpress Music on Pay-As-You-Go for a satisfying £209.95 (including £10 top up) which when compared to other multimedia-based touchscreen mobile phones on the market, is about £200 cheaper than it should be! We also have a great range of line rental savings on the 5800 Xpress Music, in our Pay Monthly phones section. It’s clear that if you’re looking to replace that old MP3 player with a mobile phone/MP3 combo and have a fully touch sensitive phone – then this is the most affordable choice.

FINAL THOUGHTS?
It seems like Nokia were concentrating a little too much on their N-series mobile phone and had left the iPhone/touch screen market alone, this however proved to be for good reason as their first entry into this highly-competitive group is an honourable one. The Nokia 5800 Xpress Music performs well on all fronts, has one of the best multimedia players I have used, incredible video and music quality and all at half the price of it’s current competitors. Good job Nokia!
