I’m a Mobile Phone, get me out of here!!

posted December 15th, 2008 by Greg

From fashion disasters to the downright ghastly, from luminous colour schemes to the extraordinary – not all mobile phones are the kind to become one of your most prized possessions. Nearly 4 Billion of us worldwide own a Mobile Phone but that didn’t stop the manufacturers letting these horrors through, Read on if you dare…

samsung-z130.JPG

Samsung Z130 – Released in 2005, the Samsung Z130 mobile phone looks more like an 80’s Walkie Talkie than a mobile handset. The Screen rotation option was included by Samsung to allow users to make Widescreen video calls–¦.. Oh dear, oh dear. Of course if looking like a Power Ranger is your thing then you may still be able to find one but I can’t imagine it won many awards! I think they should stick to making works of art like the ultra successful Samsung F480 Tocco or the M8800 Pixon mobile phones.

aiguru-sv1.JPG

Aiguru SV1 – In this shocking experiment a Calculator, a Game Boy and some kind of mobile phone were fused together using a microwave. That previous statement was a lie unfortunately but it’s safe to say, its one way to describe this stomach wrenching creation!  The Aiguru SV1 hails from the teams at Asus and Skype with the intention of being a video conferencing and communication device. It’s yet to hit the shelves and from the look of it–¦.. don’t hold your breath.

tag-heur-meridist.JPG

Tag Heuer Meridiist – This concoction may look nearly acceptable on first glance, that is until you learn that it’s covered in crocodile skin with a price tag that bites of £3,500. That’s right – Crocodile skin, who possibly cooked up the idea that crocodile skin would look good on a mobile phone?! What’s next? Bluetooth headsets made from animal fur? Mobile phones built out of Ivory? Tag Heuer – stick to making lovely watches, at leastpeople will buy those.

virgin-switchback.JPG

Virgin Switch_Back - You know it’s a bad start when you give a mobile phone a ridiculous title like the –˜Switch_Back’. A phone that in its closed position looks like a cross between a spaceship and a remote control, only gets worse once open. Even the –˜large hidden QWERTY keypad’ can’t save the Switch_Back from being a Switch_Off. You would have thought Virgin would have learnt to stay away from wacky mobile phone styles after the tragedy known as The Virgin Lobster 700 TV.

telson-f88.JPG

Telson F88 - Is it a watch? Is it a phone? Is it a great idea turned horribly wrong? Yes! Its all three of those. The F88 was designed to be a lightweight, compact communication device but unfortunately they just couldn’t pack it all into size. What resulted was a product that would be at home in a –˜Dress up like a secret agent’ playset - bulky, robotic and ugly–¦.downright awful.

So there you have it, five ghastly phones that you would not want to be seen with in public! Watch this space for the Five Top mobile phones blog, coming soon.....

Nokia N97 in sight for 2009!

posted December 12th, 2008 by Greg

The N-Series collection from Nokia contains without doubt their most sought after and acclaimed mobile phones. Upon release, the Nokia N95 was immediately a best seller, with over 15 million units sold to date and was branded a truly next-generation mobile phone. It boasted a 5.0-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss Optical lens, GPS, Wi-Fi, high speed internet browsing and many other features that allowed it to stand out from the competition. A second version of this mobile phone was released in the form of the Nokia N95 8GB, with a black colour set and expanded memory. Most recently came the Nokia N96, with Nokia deciding to upgrade the internal memory from 8GB to 16GB, increase screen size from 2.6″ to 2.8″, introduced a dual LED flash and lengthened multimedia playback time. However, Nokia did receive a considerable amount of criticism for the new model, many scoffed it was simply the –˜N95 with more memory’ and that not enough changes or enhancements were made.

Nokia had a lot to prove with the N97 and being arguably the most popular handset manufacturer in the world, it seems that they have raised the bar yet again in what is expected or even deemed possible in the mobile phone community.

Let’s take a look at some of the proposed features in a preview of Nokia’s latest project:-

  • Internal memory enhanced from 16 to 32GB. Expandable memory up to 16GB, meaning a combined memory of 48GB will now be possible, far greater than any current mobile phone handset
  • The first N-Series handset to feature a full touch screen – biggest yet at 3.5 inches.
  • Full QWERTY keypad – Added to better support social networking websites – like Facebook/Bebo and general internet usage more so than previous models
  • 5.0-megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and dual LED flash has been kept
  • New styling and ergonomics make for an N-Series phone for a new look
  • Battery capable of 37 hours of music or 4.5 hours of video
  • GPS, HSDPA, Wi-Fi, USB 2.0, stereo Bluetooth and a 3.5mm headphone jack.

Nokia are very confident that their latest offering will be a success, Vice President Jonas Geust was quoted to say -

“The Nokia N97 is the most powerful multi-sensory mobile computer in existence”.

The N97 is due to be released Mid 2009. More updates will follow as soon as we know anything!
