The Evolution of Mobile Phones

e2save

As we’ve been in a nostalgic kind of mood recently, we decided to create this little movie illustrating the evolution of the mobile phone.

You’re bound to recognise a few mobile phones from your past as we take you from 1985 to the present day; and you can even learn a few interesting facts along the way!

For instance, did you know the first mobile phone to feature an internal camera was the Sharp J-SH04, released in Japan in 2001? Or that the billionth Nokia ever sold was a Nokia 1100, purchased in Nigeria, a model designed to be dust-proof for use in dusty, developing countries?

Starting with the earliest Nokia and Motorola handsets and ending with the Nokia N95 and Apple iPhone, we also give you a glimpse into the future, with a few concept phones that may make your current mobile look dated within a couple of years!

    Why the lack of ericsson phones?

    Ericsson phones:

    * First true world phone (T-39m & T28 World)
    * First 3 phones with Bluetooth (T-36 + T-39m) & its creator.
    * First Smartphone based on Symbian OS (R386).
    * First touchscreen phone (R386)- I think.
    * First phone with proximity sensor Speaker phone (R520m)
    * First phone with mobile email client (R386 again).
    * and I think the first phones with a mobile wap browser.

    ..

    “Why the lack of ericsson phones?”

    Ericsson was fairly represented. Just google “Nokia firsts”, and you’ll find Ericsson is not the only mobile phone manufacturer making research.

    Great video, allthough I think including the price of each phone (adjusted for inflation) would have also made more of an impact.
    It helps shows the exponetial development….and price dropping…of technology.

    Also, is it just me, or do mobile phone concepts always reuse to make the really obvious leap of including them in a pair of glass’s?
    All these futuristic phone designs using (currently) fantasy technology, and no ones doing something that could be done today. Hands free, projected or OLED display in the corner. AR functions like seen on Android would naturaly be very suited to glass’s-based phone designs.
