It’s no secret that Apple have created the most successful and desired smartphone in the market with the iPhone. Since its original release in 2007, the iPhone range have been the most talked about and desired smartphones in the world. However last year, with the release of the iPhone 4S, for what seemed the most striking reaction to an iPhone release yet, the public were divided. Many Apple iPhone 3G and iPhone 3GS users jumped at the chance to get hold of the iPhone 4S but the main criticism seemed to be that Apple hadn’t changed or improved the 4S enough. If you consider the contract lengths of iPhone users, releasing what was essentially an ‘updated iPhone 4’ could actually have been very clever marketing to cater for iPhone 3G/3GS users. However, many were not impressed that the iPhone 4S was not the iPhone 5, it was not a radical redesign and did not turn out to be the groundbreaking release many were expecting.

Still, regardless of what Apple’s motives were, with so few changes many had already fixed their sites on upcoming Android and Windows Phone offerings and for what seemed like the first time yet, Apple iFans were considering jumping ship. So what are Apple going to do about it? Well the next release from Apple, that we will refer to as the iPhone 5, is set for release this year. Will Apple release the re-designed, re-imagined smartphone that we are all crying out for? We thought we would take a little overview of the designs and place the Apple iPhone 4S and what we have heard so far about the iPhone 5, side by side.

So the biggest uproar and criticism that surrounded the release of the Apple iPhone 4S was the design and what Apple changed…Nothing! Well, technically there was the most minute alteration to the placement of the mute slider on the left hand side but to the untrained eye, placing them side by side looks identical. A more robust frame was on the wish list for iFans but this also was not delivered. The Android camp absolutely loved this fact, owning an iPhone 4S didn’t exactly allow ‘bragging rights’ considering your shiny, new smartphone looked identical to your mates iPhone 4!

Apple iPhone 5 Design

So what are the expectations for the iPhone 5 design? Well the rumours are suggesting that Apple will opt for a completely redesigned form factor. A rubber or plastic banding surrounding the front edge has been widely tipped, joined by an all new aluminum back. Perhaps this new design is what will support the resdesigned antenna that has also popped up in the iPhone 5 design rumourville? Whatever happens with the design of the iPhone 5, no changes (or very subtle changes) will result in a lot of unhappy customers.

Have Apple in fact shot themselves in the foot with what was once a revolutionary design for a smartphone, one that all manufacturers at some point have tried to coy and mimic? With such a popular and strong design, are Apple in fact perhaps afraid to change it too drastically and risk an unpopular response from customers? The iPhone 3G with its rounded, curved lines was changed when the iPhone 4 was released to a more sleek, solid and modern design with straight lines and stainless steel. Apple are truly in a bit of a pickle with this one, do they stick with what they know has been popular and enjoyed but then risk less sales, Apple fans jumping ship and the critics having a field day and risk the whole iPhone 4S debacle all over again?

Only time will tell folks and with the Apple iPad 3 penned for an Easter release date and the iPhone 5 rumoured to be as far back as Autumn (again!) it is a good time yet until we will see the grand unveiling.
