To continue our epic battle between the Samsung Galaxy S3 Vs Samsung Galaxy S2, we will be looking at a comparison between the camera technology and functionality between them. Our previous blog looked at the rumoured display for the Galaxy S3, which is likely to be a 4.6 inch Super AMOLED Plus HD display. With such a stunning display it’s important we have an equally impressive camera that will have the capability to produce high standard photos and video to view on it. Samsung’s tech department has been hard at work and with the likes of the iPhone 4S and its fantastic image sensor, Nokia with their N8 which still holds a lot of weight in the cameraphone field and even Sony’s Xperia range pulling out the stops, the S3 has to impress.
However let’s not forget that the S3’s predecessor, the award winning Samsung Galaxy S2 had a pretty impressive camera of its own. At 8.0 megapixels and with an array of functionality and features, combined with that beautiful Super AMOLED display, it proved a very popular feature with S2 users. So lets start by taking a quick look at the Galaxy S2’s camera and then compare it to what we know, what we have heard and what we hope will be coming with the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Samsung Galaxy S2 Camera/Video
8.0 megapixel camera, LED flash, dual cameras, 1080P video capture (30 frames per second)
Samsung decided to improve the resolution from 5 megapixel to 8 megapixel with the Galaxy S2 and also switched the physical shutter, to a virtual shutter. There were plenty of options for customization of your shot on the fly also which was a great touch, such as altering the ISO from 100-800, white balance, metering and more. Samsung also included popular features such as smile shot, beauty shot, cartoon, face detection and panorama options. Macro mode provided sharp shots to around 10cm, colour depth and brightness were impressive. In regards to video both 720P and 1080P could capture at 30FPS with pretty impressive results. Overall the camera on the Samsung Galaxy S2 received positive press, reviews and responses from users. However the smartphone market and its respective competition has moved on since then and 2012 needs to see Samsung really raise the bar with the Samsung Galaxy S3.
Samsung Galaxy S3 Camera/Video
Up to 16.0 megapixel, large image sensor, dual LED flash, 1080P video capture (60 frames per second)
Back in October 2011, Samsung announced that they had developed the tech and hardware to include a massive 16 megapixel camera within future smartphone releases. What about the Samsung Galaxy S3 camera? Well what better release to debut a 16 megapixel camera, than the Galaxy S3. This would immediately rocket the S3 to top spot in regards to imaging power and potential and this fact alone could even see Samsung stealing some of those hardcore iFans away from Apple! But that’s not all, Samsung are rumoured to be upgrading the image sensor to 1/2.3-inch, which is far bigger than the 1/3.2 inch sensor found in the high tier smartphone currently on the market. This will see image quality, filtering and light processing better than anything we have seen on any smartphone to date. Exciting stuff indeed.
Other strong rumours behind the Samsung Galaxy S3 camera include the addition of dual flashes, an improvement on the single LED flash on the Galaxy S2 camera. This would allow the Galaxy S3 to excel in low light, darkened and indoor camera conditions. Which, to set the scene, would be ideal for impressing your friends and family when you whip out the Galaxy S3 to take great snaps when at parties, nights out, weddings…you get the idea. What about the Samsung Galaxy S3 video capabilities? Well the strongest rumour surrounding Galaxy S3 video, is that it will be able to capture 1080P video at 60 frames per second, which is double the potential of the Galaxy S2. Again, similarly to the potential for a 16 megapixel camera, 1080P HD video capture at 60FPS would also be leading in the smartphone world. Oh my Samsung, how the smartphone tables may turn upon the release of the Samsung Galaxy S3.
