Laptop FAQ's - Why choose a laptop?

More portable than a desktop PC, and more powerful than a tablet, a laptop is the perfect choice for someone on the move. The increase in Wi-Fi hotspots mean it's never been easier to get online wherever you are, giving you a freedom to roam like never before. Laptops are not just for those out and about, they also offer a great spacing saving alternative to a bulky desktop, and their wireless setup makes them neat and convenient.

Whether you spend most your life at the office, the train, or at home, there's never been a better time to invest in a new Laptop.

What should I look for in a laptop?

When selecting the best laptop for you, the main thing to consider is what you intend to use it for. Do you like movies and games, or are you looking for something to work on? Are you regularly on the move or at home? Do you spend a lot of time online? Check the list of criteria below to help determine what you should be looking for when deciding which laptop to buy.

In detail

RAM (Random Access Memory)

In a nutshell, RAM is part of the computer's memory that affects how well the laptop performs. If you're a gamer and want a smooth gameplay experience, or if you need you're planning to run multiple programmes and applications at once, make sure you check the amount of RAM. If running updated operating systems such as Windows 7, it would be best to look for at least 2GB RAM
Necessary For: Speed, Gaming, Multitasking

Weight

If you want to take your laptop wherever you go, you won't want to be carrying unnecessary weight. Chose a small, light laptop, or even a netbook if you're going to have to carry it with you.
Necessary For: Portability

Processor

The processor dictates the power of your laptop, and is measured in Gigahertz (GHz). This is another feature to consider if you're a gamer, or if you want your laptop to run particularly quickly. You'll have choice between a single or dual core processor, dual core is advisable as it means two processors running together to optimise performance. A basic laptop will have a processor of around 1GHz, whereas a top end Laptop will be operating at around 2.6GHz.
Necessary For: Speed, Gaming

Hard drive

The hard drive relates to how much space is on your computer for storing files, and is measured in Megabytes (MB), Gigabytes (GB) and if you go large enough, Terabytes (TB). If you plan on storing a lot of content you'll want to go for a large capacity, somewhere around 500 GB. Multimedia files tend to fill up a hard drive the quickest, with films, games, and music being the biggest culprits. However, if you find storage a problem, there are alternatives available in the form of external hard drives which can connect via USB.
Necessary For: Storing movies and music, installed games, downloading.

Screen size

If you are purchasing a laptop for multimedia reasons you'll want a good screen. Gaming and movie watching are more obviously more immersive when viewed on a decent size, and screens can go as large as 17 inches on some models.
Necessary For: Multimedia: movies, games

Wi-Fi

Pretty much all netbooks and laptops come equipped with Wi-fi as standard, but it's always best to double check before purchase. Wi-fi enables you to connect wirelessly to the internet from your home wireless hub or public hotspots.
Necessary For: Getting online, especially when on the move.
