7 Texting Rules For Dating

Smartphones are great, but they may be guilty of making dating even more of a minefield. Whilst our ancestors had to wait around for letters from their suitors, we’re constantly using our phones to contact our crushes, especially by text message. But what should you text? Should you text first? How long should you wait before texting?

Follow these do’s and don’ts of texting to bag yourself a second date!

DON’T be afraid to make the first move

What’s the point of getting someone’s number if you’re not going to text them? It doesn’t have to be a marriage proposal, but if you’re interested, why not start the conversation? If you’ve been on a date, a follow up thank you text is always a good idea.

DO use correct spelling and grammar

A recent survey found that 43% of singles say bad grammar is a major turn off. Typos can be forgiven but there’s just no excuse for confusing their/there/they’re or your/you’re.

Text flirting spoilt by poor spelling and grammar.

DN’T go overboard with abbreviatons

LMAO, ROFL, TTYL and IYKWIM, are best left in MSN Messenger circa 2004, and overzealous LOLing is also unlikely to impress. Too many smiley faces and emoticons can get annoying, although the creative use of emoticons can really get you a long way!

DO have something interesting to say

If there’s a sure-fire way to not get a reply it’s just texting ‘hi what you up to?’.  Try ‘you’ll never guess what just happened’ or ‘what do you think about…?’ Even a joke is much more enticing and you’ll often end up finding out a lot more about their personality, rather than that they’re “not up to much, you?”

DON’T fake mis-text

Don’t try and find out how they’d react to something by texting them and following it with an “oops I didn’t mean to send that” or “sorry, that was meant for someone else!” They’ll see right through this and you’ll just look silly.

Fake mis-text.

DO be patient

Don’t worry if you’re waiting a while for a reply. People have their own lives, they might be at work, engrossed in a book or film, or hanging out with friends. Or they might be still trying to compose a great reply to your message!

DON’T wait too long before replying

As much as you ought to be patient, no one should be waiting too long for a reply. It’s the 21st century – we all have our phones on us pretty much constantly, so acting like you’ve only just seen the message days later just isn’t convincing. Leaving a reply any longer than 24 hours can come across as rude.

A slightly delayed reply.
