Android predicted to overtake iPhone with 8.1 billion App downloads
It’s always been very competitive between Android and Apple in terms of handsets and App downloads. But competition is increasing with Android predicted to overtake iPhone in terms of their App downloads in 2011. This is predicted to happen for the first time and estimations are that App downloads from Android devices will hit 8.1 billion by the end of the year according to a report from telecoms analyst Ovum. This is a massive increase in downloads, especially compared to the figures in 2010, which showed that Android had 1.4 billion downloads. This increase is most probably because more and more people are starting to use smartphones and therefore being introduced to the wonderful (and sometimes weird) world of Apps.
Android are predicted to be doing very well this year and if you compare this to iOS App downloads, which is predicted to be 6 billion by the end of 2011, you can see how well Android are doing compared to their competitors. This is a great achievement for Android as Apple have always been pioneers of the App world. However, Apple still don’t have anything to worry about as iOS App downloads will have increased by around three times compared to 2010, where they had 2.7 billion downloads.
It’s amazing that the total number of App downloads is estimated to be 18 billion by New Year’s Eve this year. This is again absolutely massive as it shows the continued growth in interest of smartphones over the last year and how we have become almost addicted to Apps. And with Android predicted to overtake iPhone in App downloads, it shows how far Android have come. With so many different Apps to choose from ranging from fashion Apps, Apps for students and for travelling, it’s no wonder that Apps are constantly being downloaded.
