Box Office Smartphones: Best Phones in Movies
We all love our movies, whether you’re watching the latest blockbuster hit at the cinema or getting some friends together to catch a classic flick at home, we just can’t seem to keep ourselves away from the big screen. But what sort of role has technology taken in our favourite films?
As it happens, smartphones seem to love the movies, making some pretty good cameo appearances, but what are the top 5 phones that have earned themselves a place on the credits? Well, luckily for you, we’ve found five of our personal favourite mobile phone appearances on the big screen. So grab your popcorn and turn your smartphone to silent, because we’re about to get started!
Nokia 8210 – Charlie’s Angels
Back when Nokia had its strongest grip on the mobile phone market, the 8210 was used in the hugely popular Charlie’s Angels film that starred Lucy Liu and co. The 8210 was used specifically because of its interchangeable front fascia, of which each of the Angels had a separate design.
The cameo certainly made the 8210 even more popular on our high streets, with thousands upon thousands picking up the handset and changing their front covers more often than their socks.

Sony Xperia T – Skyfall
It must have cost Sony much more than a Vodka Martini (shaken, not stirred, of course) to have the Sony Xperia T make an appearance in such a high profile movie. The Xperia T is used by Bond, played by Daniel Craig, and despite it not being the flashiest handset around, it did the job well giving it a higher profile on the smartphone market.
It isn’t the most well-known Sony Xperia handset by any means, but this appearance boosted its credibility by quite a bit.

Tiny Phone – Zoolander
Back in the early noughties you’ll be sure to remember the craze with having the smallest smartphone possible, and Zoolander took this craze to epic proportions.
No bigger than your little finger, the phone Ben Stiller uses in the fashion mocking film is unfortunately fake and not available to buy and use. It’s definitely one of the funniest phones to make the big screen, but because it isn’t real, it’s highly unlikely that you’ll be able to pick this tiny handset up on eBay.

Sony Ericsson Concept – Tomorrow Never Dies
The second James Bond phone to make the cut is the Sony Ericsson concept phone out of Pierce Brosnan’s Tomorrow Never Dies. This had some pretty nifty features, and technically predicted the future!
It didn’t give up next week’s lottery numbers if that’s what you’re thinking, but it featured a fingerprint scanner, similar to the likes of the iPhone 5s and Samsung Galaxy S5 we see nowadays.
Not only did it work with fingerprints, it also drove Bond’s car, worked as a stun gun and even unlocked doors, all whilst still handling phone calls and texts. Unfortunately, the phone itself was a concept design and like the Zoolander phone, isn’t available for purchase or use.

Nokia 8110 – The Matrix
Possibly the most famous movie phones of all time, the Nokia 8110 featured a futuristic sliding front cover, an area of the phone which was modified with springs for the movie, to make the phone even cooler. The movie was no slouch either, proving to be one of the biggest hits of the 21st century so far, pretty much making Keanu Reeves one of the biggest names in Hollywood after its release.
The phone itself now has a cult following, with plenty of them finding their way onto Ebay. You might have to put a bit of work in to making the handset work the same way as it did in the film though.

So there you have it, those are just five of our favourite mobile phones which made their way onto the big screen, but they’re guaranteed not to be the last, so make sure you keep your eyes peeled for some future cameos of the smartphone variety.
