What is Black Friday?
Originally from the US, Black Friday marks the day after Thanksgiving, and always falls on the fourth Thursday of November. It made its way across the pond in 2010 when Amazon began offering discounts to its UK customers. Fast-forward to 2018 and Black Friday has become one of the biggest shopping events in the country.
In America, Black Friday goes as far back as 1952 with two potential explanations for its name. One is that Black Friday was the day retailers turned a profit, also known as ‘going into the black’. The other suggestion is that the term came into use to describe the manic traffic in Philadelphia on the day after Thanksgiving.
What is Cyber Monday?
Cyber Monday has also gained popularity in the UK in recent years, taking place on the first Monday after Thanksgiving, following Black Friday. The term was created after researchers spotted an increase in sales on Monday after Thanksgiving as people returned to work to use the faster internet.
There isn’t much of a difference between Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and the two dates are now usually used to the mark the period of ‘Black Friday’.
