What will smartphones look like in the future?

Mobile phones sure have come a long way since their first invention in 1973. Remember the first mobile phone ever successfully used to make a call? Probably not, but all you need to know that it cost £2,300 to buy new, and weighed in at a massive 2 kilograms!

And with technology taking a whole new direction in recent years with fingerprint scanners, curved screens and smartwatches, what else could be in store for us in the future? We’ve taken a look through all of the latest smartphone concepts that we might see in future phones.

Flexible screens

While Samsung showcased its flexible screen earlier in the year, we’re still to see any evidence of it on a real smartphone.

OK we might already have the Samsung Galaxy Round, a smartphone with a curved screen, and the iPhone 6 Plus which has been reported to have an unintentionally bendy body… But a display that can bend and move the same way we do? That’s something yet to be seen.

We don’t recommend trying to bend the  Apple iPhone 6 plus, but it is a remarkable handset. Why not check out the deals we have available today?

3D display

Amazon has tried to break into the market with its Fire phone, a top of the range smartphone which features a 3D display, so perhaps this something we could be seeing more of in future phones?

The benefits could be endless! Imagine scrolling through your photo gallery with your snaps popping out of the screen, or video calls feeling like you’re across the table from one another!

Could the slider be back?

Back in the noughties, the flip and slider phone was truly in fashion. Eventually phased out by the standardised bar design we have today, some of us appear to be craving for the nostalgia of the slider phone once again!

Plus with BlackBerry still persevering with its physical keyboard, maybe we could see a return of that trend too?

Zoom camera lens

Samsung kicked off the trend of the smartphone/camera hybrid with the Galaxy Zoom range, and this is definitely something that we would love to see more of from other manufacturers.

With an optical zoom which actually extends out of the handset to capture some perfect pics, our future handsets could become more of a compact camera than a smartphone!

The bracelet

If you’d asked us two years ago whether every smartphone manufacturer would have launched its own smartwatch by now, we’d have called you crazy. So now with the Apple Watch, Samsung Galaxy Gear and Moto 360, amongst others gracing our shelves, maybe the next few years could see a more advanced bracelet-style masterpiece replacing our smartphones entirely!

Obviously this would depend heavily on the ability to create a completely flexible smartphone screen, but with this technology already in the works, we could be spotting a totally new style of smartphone sooner than you think!

Foldable phones?

If the idea of a bendy bracelet phone isn’t to your liking, how about a foldable phone? With handsets getting bigger and bigger as each year goes by, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see our phones bend, stretch and fold to make it bigger or smaller as we please. If you’re out with a small bag, simply fold the phone to squash it in; need to read an email or watch a movie? Just make it bigger again!
