Hot on the heels of the iOS App Store, Google have once again sent a message to their Apple amigos. Android is catching fast. This week their app download store known as Google Play, achieved its 25 billionth app download, a feat only celebrated by Apple at their new iPad launch in March. This great achievement even ties in nicely with Google’s 14th birthday!
How many apps are on Google Play?
Since the rebranding of the Android Market to Google Play, downloads have continued to increase exponentially. Wind back to the end of 2011 and Android’s store had achieved 10 billion downloads from its selection of 320,000 apps. How many apps in 2012? Google report a mammoth selection of 675,000. We’re unsure of just how many apps are there for download (some will be in development stages), regardless Google have increased their history of downloads by 2.5 times in just 10 months.
How many apps on Android’s Google Play vs Apple’s App Store?
Part of this success weighs down to the contribution of premium Android smartphones which continue to drive sales. In just 4 months, the Samsung Galaxy S3 has sold 20 million units worldwide; a phenomenal achievement. There are also a huge volume of mid-tier and budget smartphones which edge first time buyers towards affordable Android handsets over a basic WAP phone. Every day 1.3 million Android devices are activated globally, all contributing to the sky high app downloads on Google Play.

To celebrate the occasion, the Google Play store are lowering their prices on top apps to jaw dropping 25 pence. Currently offering premium versions of Angry Birds, Draw Something and 23 other favourites, you couldn’t get a better value pic ‘n’ mix selection from a sweetshop!
Beyond games and applications, Google are expected to also offer a top 25 fire sale on books, films and music albums. Hurry though as Google’s celebration is expected to last for just 5 days. Make sure you visit the Google Play store before the 1st October, to gain benefit across the full range of multimedia titles.
