HTC desire 820 v 620

HTC desire 820 v 620

You might think that the upcoming HTC One M9 is all the HTC gossip for 2015, but with two new handsets being thrown into the mix, there’s a whole lot more to talk about. The HTC Desire 820 is a mid-range smartphone with flagship features, whilst the Desire 620 is a new replacement for the budget Desire 610.

But how do the two handsets compare when put head to head? And which new HTC Desire smartphone will come out on top? Let’s take a look!

Colourful Design

Compared to most mid-range and budget phones on the market, both the HTC Desire 820 and 620 are pretty large when it comes down to screen size. Measuring in at a whopping 5.5-inches, the Desire 820 sports a crystal clear display and a super slim 7.7mm body, whilst the Desire 620 boasts a smaller 5-inch display and slightly meatier 9.6mm waistline.

What makes both handsets stand out from the crowd however, isn’t their size; instead, the two HTC Desire smartphones feature a unique sense of style, sporting a colourful array of plastic clad cases. The 820 is available in a greater range of shades, from grey, baby blue, pink, orange and two two-tone editions in white and blue and white with an orange trim.

The HTC Desire 620 on the other hand can be picked up in dark grey, blue and the same white and blue/orange trim combo.

So if you’re big on fashion and need a smartphone that matches your style, either the Desire 820 or the 620 could be the one, although there is a wider selection with the mid-range Desire 820 which might sway it for you!

HTC Desire Specs

So, if there’s not much separating the two HTC phones when it comes to design, there must be more going on under the hood that makes them different.

Starting with the bigger Desire 820, we’re offered a powerful set of specs including a quad-core 1.5GHz processor and a Snapdragon 615 chip- features which put the phone firmly in the mid-range camp.

At the other end of the scale, the HTC Desire 620 sports a slightly less mighty 1.2GHz processor, though being quad-core just like the 820 it means that there’s hardly any difference between the two when it comes to speed.

Delve a little deeper and the Desire 820 edges ahead of its smaller brother slightly thanks to its 2GB RAM count- which is double that of the 620- and its Snapdragon 615 chipset, which makes the phone run slightly faster than the Desire 620’s  401 chip.

Craving some premium HTC features, but on a budget? How about the HTC One Mini 2?

Impressive selfie snappers!

HTC has gone wild with its camera technology, making both Desire handsets wow with their camera quality and photography features.

Again kicking off with the larger device, the Desire 820 sports a massive 13 megapixel front camera which would be impressive enough to give the phone a flagship status, making it rub shoulders with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy S4 and LG G3 at the top of the podium.

But the feature that really gives the HTC Desire 820 that extra edge is its 8 megapixel front facing lens, which is bigger than the main camera on most other mid-range phones! And it gets better; not only will your selfie shots look beautiful thanks to your impressive front snapper, but with a special Selfie mode and Photo Booth feature pre-installed on the smartphone, there’s no end to all the selfie fun you can have with the 820!

But if you thought that the Desire 620 might leave you wanting when it comes to its camera, you’d be wrong. Although it doesn’t quite measure up to the Desire 820, the 620 still boasts an 8 megapixel rear camera and 5 megapixel front camera, meaning you can still get all the same snapshots as any typical mid-tier handset despite the 620’s budget price tag!

Key features

So, with handset specs and cameras dividing the HTC Desire 820 vs 620, are there any other features that make the two phones differ?

Android KitKat

Despite both phones being launched after Android’s Lollipop release, the Desire 620 and 820 sport the KitKat version of Google’s operating system, though it’s expected that both handsets will be able to upgrade to Google’s latest sweet treat update at some point in the near feature if this is a drawback.

Despite this, with Android KitKat in tow, the Desire smartphones both feature all of Google’s best apps from the Play Store, as well as offering Google Now, your personalised ‘hub’ which tells you the latest traffic alerts, weather reports and news from sites you visit regularly.

HTC Sense 6.0

And like any other smartphone, the HTC Desire duo sport HTC’s Sense user interface which is laid on top of Android to give you HTC’s take on the popular operating system. Best of all, HTC Sense 6.0 brings you the infamous BlinkFeed, a rolling feed of news stories, social media updates and photos based on your interests.

Dual frontal BoomSound speakers

Following in the HTC One M8’s footsteps, the Desire 820 boasts an incredible set of dual frontal BoomSound speakers which make listening to music an absolute dream. With its built in amplifiers, the Desire 820 really is the smartphone to get the party started.

Unfortunately the Desire 620 only sports a single speaker, though with HTC’s BoomSound technology built in, it’s not so much of a loss after all!

HTC Desire Review

With everything considered, it’s clear that the HTC Desire 820 wins this head to head with the smaller 620- though that’s not to say it wasn’t a tightly fought battle!

The larger Desire smartphone sports a slightly mightier set of specs under the hood, and really blows all other mid-rangers out of the water with its dual camera offering. The frontal speakers and colourful design also make this a mid priced handset with some real killer flagship features.

That said, with a quad-core processor and 8 megapixel camera, the Desire 620 isn’t a bad option either- especially with its budget price tag!
