LG to introduce an OTA update and remote assistance service

LG has announced that it will be offering its OTA update app, which is ‘over the air’ (wireless updates), and remote assistance services to Europe, the Asia Pacific region and South and Central America in the second half of the year. These services have been available in Korea but they are now being introduced to more countries. The services will be available to some of the premium LG Optimus smartphones, including the Black, 2X and 3D.

OTA update – ‘over-the-air’

Customers will be able to get the FOTA app, which stands for ‘firmware over the air’, enabling customers to get the latest updates for their phones wirelessly.  Software updates will be directed to customers’ phones and they won’t need to connect to a computer. This will be great for LG Optimus users as it will be much more convenient for them to receive updates wirelessly whilst on the go.

The remote call service feature allows customers to be connected to customer services through 3G or Wi-Fi if they have any problems with their phones. This service will be region and operator dependant but it will offer customers the hassle free luxury of having their issues solved without having to go anywhere. This could well be the future of customer services from LG, with no need to travel to a shop or call a premium rate support number when experiencing problems with your phone.

Once the customer has registered the Remote Call application on their handset, the remote customer care assistants will be able to get wireless access to the smartphone. They can quickly diagnose what problems the phone has and the customer won’t need to go to great length to explain the problem to their advisor. But rest assured, they won’t get access to your private information like your text messages, emails or photos, unless the customer agrees to it for the purposes of solving their phone issues. This is taking customer service onto the next level as it makes life so much easier for users and is sure to be welcomed by Optimus smartphone users. If successful, expect to see it on more LG mobile phone models in the future.

Are you an LG Optimus owner? What do you think of this OTA update and would you use the service?
