Orange test out ‘sound charge t shirts’ at Glastonbury

Glastonbury, the home of festivals, the theatre of dreams, and now the testing ground for a new sound charge T-Shirt offered by Orange.

Yes you heard right, a sound charge T-Shirt. The garment (which closely resembles the front side of a teletubby) is designed to keep your phone juiced up over the Glastonbury festival through the power of sound.

The completely unsubtle white patch at the front is made from a piece of space age material called piezoelectric film which turns sound vibrations into electrical charge. Trying to understand exactly how it does it is beyond us and the whole process for lack of a better word seems more like magic than anything else.

Orange reckons that the t shirt is capable of charging your smartphone for the entire weekend on noise alone. However we’re not just talking about the kind of day to day noise and ramblings made by you and your friends as you sit by the tent planning out your schedule of acts for the day. Oh no, we’re talking main stage, speakers blaring and crowd chanting. About 80 decibels should do it, which incidentally is the equivalent of standing 15 metres away from a freight train when it’s travelling at full speed.

Still we have to put it to Orange, it certainly is a novel idea and hopefully the T-Shirts will strike a chord with all you Glastonbury goers. Just remember that having your smartphone strapped to your chest above a white sheet of clever vibrating film isn’t going to win you any fashion awards but if you know the importance of having a charged phone, especially at festivals then you probably won’t care. Let’s just hope Orange were clever enough to make it waterproof too!
