Our run down of the iPad 2
Yesterday you may have seen our blog post building up to the iPad 2. In it we gave our top three predictions as to what we thought we would most likely see on the new Apple slate. And at the risk of sounding smug we are happy to say we were right… well sort of.
Our trio of predictions were plucked out of the excessive list of rumours. Some which were credible and others were just down right ridiculous.
Our first prediction was more of a need than a want as we prayed to the Apple gods for this year’s iPad to come bearing a camera. And like waiting for a bus, two came at once. One at the back for your pics and videos and one snuggled in at the front for the all important videocall app ‘Facetime’.
The back camera can record in 720p which is handy as Apple announced a new Digital AV adapter which will not only connect the new iPad 2 to your HD TV at home, but also your iPhone 4, ipad 1 and iPod Touch 4th Gen.
Second on our rumour round up were our suspicions that the iPad had been on a diet. And indeed it had. Losing a significant 129g in just one year, the iPad 2 is certainly the slimmer of the two. In fact it is so slim that it’s even slimmer than the iPhone 4 which was once heralded as the world’s slimmest smartphone.
With our mystic Meg fortune capabilities going so well we started to contemplate on this weeks lottery numbers, that was until we fell at the final rumour hurdle. Unfortunately our final prediction of a ‘Retina’ screen didn’t come true, then again if truth be told it was more of a wish than a prediction. With the ‘Retina’ display you get incredible clarity and definition. So much so that it too was a world leading Apple technology and still does stand proudly as one of the highest resolution screens in the world.
Although it is shown prominently on the iPhone 4 we did cast our doubts on whether it could be scaled up to the dizzying heights of the iPads 9 inch face. Sadly the batteries of today just aren’t up to the task of taking on the 9 inch retina.
With the dust finally settling and the rumour mill grinding to a halt it is nice to finally get up close and personal with the iPad 2. Especially as now we can also confirm that in addition to our correct predictions the iPad 2 will also come with an improved A5 Processor and iOS 4.3.
All in all we are quite happy with our score of two out of three, although it wasn’t just iPad 2 rumours circulating around yesterdays Apple event. Apples CEO Steve Jobs health status was just as much as, if not more a mystery to the gaggle of tech journalists than the iPad 2 itself.
With snippets of news, paparazzi shots and rumours surfacing of a return of his pancreatic cancer the Apple CEO has been on a prolonged leave of absence from the company in recent months. It was then a complete surprise to see the man himself not only appear on the stage as if out of nowhere, but then to start off yesterday’s proceedings too.
Jobs opened by saying “We’ve been working on this product for a while and I didn’t want to miss this event,” Then again we can hardly blame him, with industry reports suggesting that Apple will be selling around 40m of the devices this year alone its not hard to see how important this is for Jobs and Apple as a whole.
