The South Korean company is at it again with the release of the Samsung Galaxy J5, a smartphone that delivers the ultimate bang for your buck. In fact the price, at around £120, simply doesn’t correspond to the hardware and software that Samsung is practically giving away.
Hang on, there is a another piece of good news for budget smartphone buyers. The Samsung Galaxy J5 has the look of a premium smartphone and it wouldn’t look out of place sat next to a Samsung Galaxy S6 or Samsung Galaxy S5 either, making it ideal for both serial spec lovers and fashionistas alike!
Galaxy J5 design: it’s all in the detail
The Galaxy J5 reproduces many of the great design traits of past that have made Samsung products desirable. These include a metallic edging that softly curves as it transcends to the back.
On the back, we find minimal clutter with only the speaker grills, flash and a slightly protruding camera lens breaking up the design. On the bottom edge of this great value smartphone are the ports for the microUSB cable and audio jack.
On the front side of the Galaxy J5, we find a slim bezel surrounding the aptly sized 5” HD Super AMOLED display. This has a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels and is designed to deliver a great experience for gamers. It’s also surprisingly light at 146 grams and equally surprisingly slim at 7.9mm.
The internals don’t let this phone down either, with a speedy quad-core processor with 1.5GB RAM powering the experience. A healthy 8GB of internal memory is free for the user and a microSD card slot can be used to boost the memory upwards towards the 128GB level – so you needn’t settle if you don’t want to.
The Samsung Galaxy J5 is sheathed in a choice of colours; black, gold and white. It’s not the most exciting colour palette in the world, but maybe this is clever choice when contrasted against the brilliant colours reproduced on the display.
Galaxy J5 camera: it’s snap-tastic!
If you weren’t smiling at the start of this smartphone review then it’s time to get your cheesiest grin out. The 13MP camera, yes that’s not a misprint, has more resolution than many other smartphones, such as the Apple iPhone 6 (8MP)!
Carrying on with this comparison, we find a fancy camera sensor, which is the same size as the one used on the iPhone 6. But, the f1.9 aperture indicates that this snapper is primed for capturing fine detail in the day, whereas the iPhone 6 (f2.2 aperture) is supreme at night.
Now it really is time to smile, as this portrait taking selfie camera delights with its own, very respectable, 5MP resolution. The Galaxy J5 aids the vain with a palm-gesture shutter, wide selfie mode, selfie flash and Beauty Face enhancements. After all, who doesn’t want to smooth out their complexion, enhance their eyes and redden those lips?
Stepping back behind the lens, photographic tools include Interval Shot, Panorama, Sound and Shot, Sports Mode and 1080p video recording at 30 frames per second.
Galaxy J5 features: from the concert hall to the boardroom
£120 buys a lot, or at least it does with the Galaxy J5. Samsung has thrown plenty of clever software into the multimedia side of things to ensure that sound for music, movies and catchup TV can be finely tuned to the individual. Sound modes include Concert Hall Mode, SoundAlive+, Tube Amp Effect, Equaliser and Bass Boost 3D.
On the flip side of entertainment, there are features that are perfect for the boardroom. A document viewer / editor, OneNote, OneDrive, Gmail, Skype, WeChat, Hangouts and the Okay Google digital assistant all make an appearance.
Add onto these apps the flexibility of the Android Lollipop v5.1 operating system, 4G / Wi-Fi Chrome Browser, Wi-Fi hotspot creation and GPS with Google Maps, and it is easy to see why this budget-friendly smartphone is almost priceless.
The final piece of the Samsung Galaxy J5 puzzle is a removable 2,600mAh battery, which can deliver up to 18 hours of talk time.
The Samsung Galaxy J5 verdict is one of the easiest to make. This is bang for you buck gone mad! Can’t wait to get you mitts on it? Keep an eye on our Samsung Galaxy range pay monthly contracts.
