With every new smartphone release, we’re always safe in the knowledge that the next the following year’s model is just around the corner. And with the influx of Samsung Galaxy S5 rumours already flooding in, critics are being quick to make comparisons between the two Samsung smartphones.

So has Samsung really overhauled the Galaxy S5, or is it just a slightly enhanced version of the Galaxy S4?

Galaxy S5 features

Putting the S4 head to head with the S5, there are some distinct differences perfect for discussion.

For starters, the S5 is rumoured to feature a 5.3-inch screen, compared to the S4’s 5-inch display, somewhat bridging the gap between Samsung’s S model and its range of Note devices.

But that’s not where the comparison between the two flagships end; from the Galaxy S5 rumours we’ve seen so far the S5 is not just going to be an evolution of the current S4. Instead, the S5 will sport an entirely new look and feel, offering a whole range of high tech features sure to excite Samsung users everywhere.

A metal bodied S5?

Something that smartphone critics have been crying out for is a premium-looking Samsung smartphone to hit the market to heighten the rivalry with Apple and HTC. And rumour has it that the Samsung Galaxy S5 will sport a full metal jacket compared to the S4’s usual smooth plastic shell.

This will revolutionise the appearance of the S5, marking it out from any other Samsung smartphone on the market. It might even have Apple shaking in its boots too…

Will the S5 have an eye scanner?

Perhaps the most exciting rumour we’ve spotted about the S5 is its alleged built-in iris scanner. Forget the iPhone’s fingerprint scanner, 2014 is the year for pushing the boundaries, and Samsung is the company to do it.

The iris scanner will heighten security beyond anything other manufacturers have done before, allowing users to unlock and perform commands on their S5 using just their eyes. Now that’s something that the S4 doesn’t offer, isn’t it?

A new version of Samsung TouchWiz?

Another key feature of the Galaxy S5 is its brand new user interface. The Galaxy S4, along with most other Samsung smartphones, uses the Android operating system, laced with its own UI, called TouchWiz.

However, leaked images depict the S5’s software with a totally new look. Instead of featuring static icons that we’re used to seeing on the Galaxy S4, the S5’s user interface will consist of dynamic tiles, allowing you to read notifications and news stories without having to even open up an app.

Critics are calling the new system a combination of Windows Phone’s tile system and Google’s Google Now function rolled out on Android KitKat.

Wherever Samsung’s inspiration for the changes have come from, we’re welcoming the fresh lick of paint it will give the S5, completely radicalised the S4’s tired-looking system.

S4 vs S5 camera wars

One area where Samsung revolutionised the Galaxy S4 compared to its predecessor, the S3, was in its camera. And now it looks like the Korean company is set to do the same with the Samsung Galaxy S5.

We’ve seen a progressive jump in Samsung camera lenses where megapixels are concerned, leaping from 8 megapixels in the S3 to 13 megapixels in the S4. The Galaxy S5, however, is alleged to pack in a whopping 20 megapixels into its rear-facing snapper.

However, we’re expecting the S5 to sport all of the same impressive camera features as the S4, marking more of an evolution than a revolution; but if it aint broke, don’t fix it!
