Sony is on fire this year, with rumours suggesting we’ll see at least four new handsets released. One device which has already arrived is the new Sony Xperia E4, an upgrade from last year’s budget Xperia E3. So what can we expect to see from the updated E4? Here’s our Sony Xperia E4 vs E3 review…
Bigger Design!
The Xperia E4 is both bigger and better than the Xperia E3 smartphone. With a 5-inch display, the E4 is set to be a whole half an inch bigger than its predecessor, making it look more like a flagship phone at first glance despite its budget status.
We all know that Sony loves a colourful handset; the Xperia Z3 is available in mint green and copper while the Z3 Compact can be picked up in red and aqua blue. However, the Xperia E4 is taking a more minimal view. Whilst the Sony Xperia E3 is available in black, white, yellow and copper, the E4 is currently available in just black or white.

When it comes to specs under the E4’s glossy case, we’re being treated with a surprise. Boasting a quad-core processor with 1.3GHz of power, the Xperia E4 is that bit speedier then the XperiaE3 which features an ever so slightly smaller 1.2GHz processor.
Memory has also doubled in the new Sony Xperia model from 4GB of internal storage to 8GB which is great news if you’ve got a lot of photos and tunes to load onto your phone. And if 8GB on the E4 isn’t enough, we’ve also got a slot for a removable memory card meaning you can more than double your memory without having to delete any of your much loved pics!
Camera Comparison
The Sony Xperia E3 camera marked a breakthrough in the budget smartphone world thanks to its array of built in Sony camera features. And we’re being given exactly the same offering from Sony with this year’s E4 release.
There’s a 5 megapixel camera on the back of the Xperia E4, identical to its older brother. Although this is nothing spectacular on paper, a Sony camera of this quality on such a budget phone makes it a real winner. Plus, with Sony packing in the megapixels on its front facing camera lens, we’re seenig a much improved 2mp front camera compared to the Xperia E3’s VGA front snapper.

Better Battery Life
The Xperia E3 was launched with a focus on its impressive battery life, with the inclusion of a 2,330mAh battery and an in built power saving mode. And in true sibling rivalry, anything the E3 can do the E4 can do better; sporting a more powerful two-day battery, the Xperia E4 will keep you running for quite a while to say the least!
Android 4.4 KitKat
Despite Android 5.0 Lollipop being released back in November, the Xperia E4 is launching with Android KitKat in tow, similar to the E3. Although this still offers all of the same features that we’re used to from the Google OS, including Google Now, Chrome and access to the Android app store, it’s a little disappointing as we don’t get to witness Google’s latest sweet treat on the Xperia E4. But with an update due sooner rather than later, we aren’t too upset.

So now we’ve got to grips with the Sony Xperia E4, how much will you have to pay for it? Thankfully, Sony is keeping the price below the £100 mark, so even for the most budget conscious users out there, the Xperia E4 shouldn’t be causing too much damage to your bank account.
