Sony looks set to steal the show this year with its array of top quality, premium looking smartphones. The Xperia Z2 is the company’s current flagship, sporting a range of ground breaking features and a mighty camera. However, Sony is now storming the mid-range market with its latest release, the Xperia T3.
So how do these two smartphones compare? And, more importantly, which one should you buy?
Identical Sony design
Put both handsets side by side and the Sony Xperia T3 and Xperia Z2 are almost identical. Sporting 5.3-inch and 5.2-inch respective displays and high-quality aluminium trim, both devices look a million dollars. When you turn the phones onto their backs, however, the differences start to appear. The Xperia Z2 boasts a glossy body made of tempered glass, whereas the T3 offers a soft-touch plastic rear casing in white, black or purple.
But what the Z2 might gain in style, the T3 wins back in size. Measuring just 7mm thick, the Xperia T3 is the world’s slimmest 5.3-inch smartphone around, making it considerably more slim-line than its older cousin. So if you are hot on the heels of Vogue with more of a high street budget, the Sony Xperia T3 is the perfect smartphone for you!

Xperia T3 vs Xperia Z2 Specs
If there’s one thing that Sony does well, it’s offering some pretty impressive hardware under its glossy premium shell. The Z2 is probably the best example of this, boasting a humongous quad-core 2.3GHz processor, 3GB of RAM and the new Snapdragon 801 Snapdragon chipset.
And while the Xperia T3 might not sit as high up the Sony tree in terms of specs, it doesn’t skimp either. With a quad-core 1.4GHz processor, the T3 already stands apart from many of its dual-core mid-range rivals. It features 1GB of RAM and an SD card slot allowing users to expand the T3’s memory up to 32GB, which means there’s plenty of room to store each and every Game of Thrones episode for an action packed marathon!
Sony Triluminos display
One of the key similarities between the Xperia T3 and Z2 is their displays. We may have already mentioned the almost identical sizes of each smartphone’s screen, but they share more than just the same dimensions. While the Z2 sports a mighty 424 pixels per inch compared to the slightly smaller 277 ppi of the T3, Sony has packed both devices with an impressive Triluminos display.
Without giving you a science lesson, Sony’s Triluminos display allows both Sony smartphones to show colours far more vividly thanks to a blue LCD screen rather than a typical white one. This throws the pixel count of the Xperia T3 straight out of the window; with Triluminos technology built in, no other mid-range, or even top of the range smartphone can even touch the T3’s crystal clear display.
Camera: 8MP vs 20.7MP
The camera on any smartphone is usually the main talking point for both users and critics alike. The Sony Xperia Z2, like the Z1 and Z that came before it, set the cat among the pigeons with its amazing 20.7 megapixel camera. This huge megapixel count really makes the Z2 the camera phone to beat by other manufacturers in the market.
But one thing that really makes the Xperia Z2 camera a knockout has got to be its range of in-built camera features. Although most premium smartphones offer an LED flash, autofocus and HDR modes, the Z2 features far more, including Background Defocus, to make your photos look like a professional’s; AR Effect, to add fun moving effects to your shots; and Timeshift Burst, which captures clips at 120 frames per second, allowing you to scroll through each individual shot to find the perfect one.
OK, so while the Sony Xperia T3 might not sport exactly the same high megapixel camera as the Z2, Sony has still managed to pack in an 8MP lens into the device, making it just as impressive as all your other mid-range alternatives. Where the T3 wins back those precious points is in the fact that it offers all the same creative and professional camera modes as the Z2. So, along with AR Effect, HDR and Timseshift Burst, the Xperia T3 also features Portrait Retouch, Social Live and Superior Auto mode, putting you on a par with your typical Z2 user.
Verdict: which is best, the Sony Xperia T3 or the Z2?
As you can see, the Sony Xperia Z2 is the clear winner when it comes to a direct comparison between both Sony smartphones. With a massive camera, glossy glass exterior and mightier processor, the Z2 is one of the best premium smartphones on the market. But with that also comes a slightly more premium price tag. And that’s where the Xperia T3 comes in.
Whilst the Xperia T3 might not boast quite an elite range of specs, it really is the crème de la crème of mid-range smartphones. With a larger than life screen packed with Sony’s Trimluminos technology, a camera bursting with built-in features and a quad-core processor, the T3 is the perfect solution for a tech lover on a tight budget.
