Heard of Netflix Party, but not sure where to start? Explore our step by step guide below; we’ll breakdown exactly what the Chrome extension can do, how to install it on your browser and how to use it.

What is Netflix Party?

A new way to watch Netflix with long-distance friends and faraway family members, Netflix Party is a Google Chrome extension that allows you to stream your favourite shows at the same time as other people. There’s no need to press play at exactly the same moment – with Netflix Party, your screens will be completely synchronised, so you and your friends can seamlessly experience blockbusters and award-winning TV shows together, wherever you are in the world.

A highlight of the Netflix Party extension is that it also has a handy Chatroom feature. Running down the right-hand side of the screen, you’ll be able to see messages from anyone who’s watching with you, and replying is easy too, so you can talk about the movie as you watch it, just like you would in person.

How do I install Netflix Party?

Getting setup on Netflix Party is quick and hassle-free. Firstly, it’s worth noting that at the moment, it can only be used on a desktop with Google Chrome, rather than on a smart TV, PlayStation or Xbox. Once you’re logged into a computer and have Chrome up and running, head to the Netflix Party website, and click on the Install Netflix Party button sitting at the top right corner of the page.

When the Chrome Web Store window opens, hit the Add to Chrome button on the right; a pop up will soon appear, which asks if you want to Add Netflix Party? so you’ll need to select Add Extension at this point. After this, you should be able to see a small grey NP icon in the top right corner of your browser – this is the installed extension, and once you see this, you’re ready to start streaming.

How to Host a Netflix Party

After you’ve successfully installed the extension, you should be fully equipped to have your first Netflix Party. To host a viewing, open a Netflix window and sign into your account. Then just choose the film or TV show of your choice and hit play; the NP icon in the corner of your screen should turn from grey to red, showing that it’s ready to use.

Click the blue Start the Party button and you’ll be provided with a URL that you can share with anyone you want to invite. Send this link to friends and family, then wait for them to arrive – in the meantime, the Chatroom should have opened, so you can write an opening message to get the conversation started.

How to Attend a Netflix Party

Going to a Netflix Party that one of your friends has setup is even easier than hosting one. Once you’ve got the URL, follow the link and you’ll be taken through to your Netflix page – then just click on the red NP icon in the corner of the page, and you’ll be added to the party, where you watch the movie in sync with your friend and chat at the same time.

Netflix Party isn’t currently compatible with any other streaming service – but there are plenty of other plug-ins you can use to host a virtual screening. If you’d rather watch Amazon Prime, or YouTube, you can try installing TwoSeven, or if you’ve just signed up to Disney+, you can binge all your favourite classics with your friends using Watch Party.
