Larger than Life! What to Expect from the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2

Larger than Life! What to Expect from the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2

With the Galaxy Note 4 having landed in September, the Samsung rumour mill is already going crazy for the next installment. As if the Korean company couldn’t get enough of larger than life phones, the Galaxy Mega 2 is set to grace our shelves with its nothing-short-of-humongous 6-inch display.

So what exactly is the Mega 2, and how will be compare to the original 6.3-inch Mega? If you’re a firm believer of the saying bigger is better, then the Mega 2 could well be the phone for you…

Is 6-inches too big?

We’ve all heard of the term ‘phablet’, (translation: a device that’s in between a phone and a tablet), but the Samsung Galaxy Mega 2 is taking the phrase to the extreme. With a 6-inch display, the Mega 2 is set to be one of Samsung’s largest handsets, coming in just short of the Mega 6.3” launched last year. The Mega 2 is even predicted to be larger than the hotly anticipated Note 4, the king of the phablets.

But this begs the question: how big is too big?

With most tablets starting from the 7-inch mark, there’s nothing that can’t be done on the slightly smaller Galaxy Mega 2. Whether you’re a film fanatic constantly hooked up to Netflix, or an extreme gamer that can’t get enough of Candy Crush, having a larger than life display can only be a good thing, right?

Also, Samsung has introduced the Easy Side Panel, a feature which makes it easier to use the Mega one handed: with navigational buttons displayed on one side of your phone’s screen (all depending on whether you’re right or left handed), you needn’t worry about the Galaxy Mega 2 being too big to handle.

Did you know? Apple has launched a large-screened iPhone too! Here’s why we think a 5.5″ iPhone 6 Plus will be a hit!

Design

Size aside, what’s in store for the Mega 2’s display? Knowing Samsung, the device will look remarkably similar to its predecessor, and every other Samsung before it. According to leaked snapshots publicised in Asia, the Mega 2 will sport the same leather-look back as the Galaxy Note 3, firmly grouping it with last year’s flagships rather than this year’s S5 and Note 4 line up.

Mega 2 Specs and Features

Considering the Mega 2’s massive dimensions, it’s not surprising that Samsung has packed the device full of massive specs too. The phone includes a quad-core 1.5GHz processor under the hood, on top of 1.5GB of RAM which is a huge jump up from the Mega 6.3’s dual core processor.

In terms of Samsung features, the Mega 2 is also promising the world. With the split screen Multi-Window feature first brought to us on the Note 3, you can simultaneously open as many apps as you want side by side. Plus, with Samsung Magazine on board, you can stand out of the crowd with Samsung’s crazy dynamic home screen which displays news on your fave celebs, sports teams and hobbies.

Also, an eight megapixel camera jumps on the back of this mega handset, similarly to the original Mega 6.3. Although this might not be enough to rival the Note 4 or S5 on paper, leaked images are already demonstrating just how impressive the Mega 2 camera is.

Galaxy Note 4 vs Galaxy Mega 2

So, we’ve seen all there is to see about the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Mega 2, but how do you think the phablet will compare to Samsung’s Note 4 release?

First things first, the Galaxy Note 4 only (I say only) features a 5.7-inch screen, which, we never thought we’d be saying this, is considerably smaller than the Galaxy Mega 2. Although the untrained eye might not notice this difference in size, you will be sure to pick up on the phablets’ very different designs. However, with the same faux leather jacket adorning the Galaxy Note 4, the stitched leather bound Mega 2 isn’t too dissimilar in the design stakes.

When it comes to specs, it’s fair to say the Note 4 sits within the Premiership compared to the Mega 2’s Championship status. But that doesn’t mean that the Mega 2 is weak under the hood; after all, we are comparing it to one of the mightiest handsets on the market! Plus, when you tie in that the Galaxy Mega 2 will have a price tag of around £300-£400 compared to the Samsung Galaxy Note 4 price of £500-£600, it’s practically a no brainer!
