Keeping in touch
With unlimited and large data plans, you'll never lose touch with family or friends. With popular social networking apps like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, you can chat, upload photos and videos all day long without the worry of bill shock at the end of the month.
TV on the go
Apps like Netflix, YouTube and BBC iPlayer allow you to watch videos and catch-up TV on the go with ease. Just open your app, pop your favourite movie on and get comfy on that long train journey home. With smartphones like the LG G3, it means you can stream content in 4K Ultra HD without burning through your data allowance.
With changing technology, more and more mobile devices need mobile data to function to their fullest potential if they're not connected to a Wi-Fi network. If you're out and about and don't have a Wi-Fi connection but want to check your emails or stay in touch on Facebook, then you'll need mobile data. You may not need a large data plan if you're a light casual user but you will need some if you have apps which connect online.
Currently, only T-Mobile range unlimited data plans. While networks like Vodafone and O2 don't offer unlimited data, they do offer large plans. With e2save you can get up to 8GB of data with O2 non-iPhone handsets and 20GB with iPhone handsets and 20GB with Vodafone.
Unfortunately, when you see 'unlimited data' it doesn't necessarily mean truly unlimited. Details of whether your unlimited data plan is actually truly unlimited will be in the terms and conditions of your chosen network. If you go over your capped limit, there may be hefty charges, so be careful. You can keep a track of your daily usage using a downloaded app of you network from your mobile phone, so you always stay on top.
The main difference between 3G and 4G is speed. As 3G is an older generation, this is not quite as fast as 4G. 4G connectivity is superfast and resembles the speeds you get when you're connected to a Wi-Fi network. Only a select few budget mobile phones that are being released only come with 3G connectivity. Most new smartphones now come 4G ready as standard. This means that even on an budget smartphone, you can have lightning data speeds thanks to 4G providing you're on the right contract.
