Which Google Pixel is Right For Me?

Since the launch of the first Google Pixel handset back in 2016, the brand has brought us four fantastic generations of smartphones, boasting tech that evolves with each new release.

Known for their brilliant camera specs, the Google Pixel series puts photography front and centre, as well as convenience-driven features like fast charging, long-lasting battery and Google Assistant.

Google Pixel 4a

Pixel phones have a reputation for great cameras, and Google has added two brilliant single-lens cameras to the Google Pixel 4a. On the device you'll find an 8MP camera on the front for all your selfie and video call needs, while an intelligent 12.2MP dual-pixel camera sits on the back.

Features like HDR+ help take the device's photography capabilities further. Portrait Blur, for example, makes it possible to add a bokeh effect with a few clicks - even after you take a photo - while the aforementioned HDR+ will automatically adjust the colour and lighting in your picture, to give you the best result. Shooting in darkness doesn't have to be a struggle either - just open up Night Sight for beautifully clear, detailed photos in low light levels.

Cameras aside, the Google Pixel 4a also features a Full HD+ 5.8-inch screen made from Corning Gorilla Glass 3, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and a long-lasting 3,140 mAh battery with support for 18W fast charge. Multi-tasking is easy with this handset as well, with Android 10, an ARCore and a high-spec Qualcomm Snapdragon 730G chipset ensuring everything runs quickly and smoothly.

Google Pixel 4

Quick look: 5.7-inch FHD+ display, 162g, 2,800 mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM, dual 12.2MP + 16MP camera.

Released in October 2019, the Google Pixel 4 comes with a whole host of fun new features, on top of the latest operating system, Android 10. This new operating system brings several new capabilities too, like Smart Reply, which will conveniently give you a selection of appropriate responses to choose from to help you get back to people more quickly.

If you’re keen on photography, the Google Pixel 4 won’t disappoint. With a 12.2MP wide-lens and a 16MP telephoto lens, you’ll have access to a more advanced version of Portrait Mode and next generation Night Sight, as well as Super Res Zoom so you can capture sharp snaps at a distance.

Quick Gestures is another fun addition – using Motion Sense technology, you can now access your phone completely hands-free. Using a range of movements, you’ll be able to screen a call or skip a track, all without laying a finger on your handset.

Google Pixel 4 XL

Quick look: 6.3-inch QHD+ display, 193g, 3,700 mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 processor, 6GB RAM, dual 12.2MP + 16MP camera.

With a display that measures 0.3” wider than the Google Pixel 3a XL, this is the largest handset Google has released to date. The Google Pixel 4 XL is also the first phone in the Pixel series to offer Quad HD+ resolution, so you can expect even smoother, sharper graphic - an ideal choice for gamers.

The Google Pixel 4XL also houses a bigger battery – at 3,700 mAh it can easily keep up with the demands of a wider screen, and the fast charging feature means you can get seven hours of battery life by plugging in for just 15 minutes.

4-and-4xl

You’ll find the same cutting-edge camera system on the Google Pixel 4XL, with a 12.2MP wide lens and 16MP telephoto lens capable of capturing the cosmos, via Astrophotography mode. This Night Sight feature will enable you to actually take detailed photos of the Milky Way, with each shot taking just 16 seconds to process.

Fuelling both the Google Pixel 4 and the 4 XL is the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 chipset, a processor designed specifically with gaming and graphics in mind.

Google Pixel 3a

Quick look: 5.6-inch FHD+ display, 147g, 3,000 mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor, 4GB RAM, 12.2MP dual-pixel camera.

A premium smartphone at an affordable price point, the Google Pixel 3a is brilliant value for money. The sleek polycarbonate body is comfortable and compact in the hand, and unlocking is easy with the rear-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The Google Pixel 3a runs Android Pie out of the box, so you can enjoy add-ons like Digital Wellbeing, a dashboard which analyses the way you use your smartphone. Google Assistant is also on-board the Google Pixel 3a, and more useful than ever. Just squeeze the sides of your handset to activate, and then use the wake words “Hey Google” to make your request. There are plenty of handy commands you can ask your phone to carry out while you’re busy, like texting a friend, navigating for you or simply “play some music” if you’re feeling indecisive.

As you’d expect, the camera system on this handset is a highlight. The 12.2MP dual-pixel setup has clever features like Night Sight for capturing clear images in low light. Improved Portrait Mode now also includes a Depth Editor, so you can bring your friends into sharp focus against artfully blurred backgrounds.

Google Pixel 3a XL

Quick look: 6-inch FHD+ display, 167g, 3,700 mAh battery, Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor, 4GB RAM, 12.2MP dual-pixel camera.

While it houses many of the same features as its smaller counterpart, the Google Pixel 3a XL is a great choice for users who prefer a bigger handset, without compromising on specs. With its larger 6-inch screen, the FHD+ display with OLED technology makes for an even more vibrant and immersive viewing experience, and the 18:9 aspect ratio is perfect for streaming your favourite shows on-the-go.

Both handsets run on a powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 670 processor, and each also contains a standard 3.5mm headphone jack, so if you forget to charge your Bluetooth headphones, you can simply plug in.

The camera system is comprised of the same 12.2MP dual-pixel lens as the Google Pixel 3a, with Night Sight and Portrait Mode in tow, and it also has the 8MP front camera, so expect crystal clear selfies and video calls.
